Match Report
The newly formed Buxton Vikings playing in their first competitive match got off to the best possible start when they faced Tansley Titans on Saturday. They were unlucky to go behind in the 2nd minute but showed great character to hit back virtually straight away. Joe Turner unleashing a thunderbolt of a curling shot into the top corner from outside the area to make the scores level.
The Vikings sturdy defending snuffed out everything Tansley had to throw at them. Captain Matthew Etchells, Jack Tomlinson, Lewis Gannon, Tiernan McDonald and 'keeper Jackson Baker were all brilliant when they played in defence and were constantly helped out by the midfield of Harry Griffin, Alex Hughes and Zach Moss, who also made many driving runs through the heart of the Titan's defence.
In the 14th minute the deadlock was broken by substitute Callum Holmes with his first few touches of the ball. He took the ball into the area after some neat passing and coolly slotted home to put the Vikings 2-1 up. He then scored again, 12 minutes into the second half with a left footed low drive after a skilful run down the wing and through ball by Etchells.
The Titans scored late on and pushed for an equaliser but Buxton held on for a well deserved win. Credit must go to both teams for a thoroughly exciting match which served up a feast of entertainment for all the spectators.
