Match Report
The Vikings had a tough draw in the first round of the cup against a good Centurians side but it was the Vikings who took an early lead. A fabulous finish from a very tight angle saw Callum Holmes give the Vikings an early lead. Tiernan McDonald and captain Jack Tomlinson were excellent in defence as the Centurians tried to get back in the game but even they couldn’t stop the Centurians getting an equaliser. The Vikings continued to be a threat with Alex Baggaley and Lewis Gannon making excellent runs after being fed from James Tarr in midfield. As half time was approaching the ball fell to Callum Holmes outside the area who hit a thunderbolt that the Matlock keeper could not keep out. This gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead going into half time.
The second half saw the Vikings carry on where they left off and the move of the game put them 3-1 ahead. A through ball from Tiernan McDonald was dummied by Joe Turner allowing it to run on to Lewis Gannon who surged into the box and slotted the ball home in the far corner. The Centurians threw everything forward in an attempt to get back into the game but found Matthew Etchells and Elliot Booth hard to get past. Anything that did went past was handled well by Jackson Baker in the Vikings goal. They eventually managed to pull a goal back to make it 3-2 but the Vikings ran out deserved winners and can now look forward to the next round of the cup.
Team: Jack Tomlinson, Joe Turner, Zach Moss, Jackson Baker, Lewis Gannon, Callum Holmes, Matthew Etchells, Tiernan McDonald, Alex Baggaley, Elliot Booth, James Tarr.
