Match Report
After a lengthy lay off for both teams the game started very evenly however it was Spartans who broke the deadlock when a lucky break gave them the opportunity to open the scoring. The score remained 1-0 for the remainder of the half, with Viking's only real chance coming when Matthew Etchells crossed for Callum Holmes and his shot swerved agonizingly wide.
The second half was much more lively, Alex Baggaley forced an excellent save from the Spartans 'keeper after some creative build-up play from Lewis Gannon and Matthew Etchells. The resulting corner was taken quickly and the ball managed to find it's way through a mele of players to Callum Holmes who coolly slotted home. After Jackson Baker kept the score at 1-1 with a string of excellent saves, Holmes grabbed his second, intercepting the defender's clearance and blasting the ball past the Matlock 'keeper to put the Vikings 2-1 up. Matlock then equalised with a cracking shot from outside the area but Buxton then stepped up another gear. Harry Griffin was a constant threat down the wing with some great passes. The Vikings then took the lead when Zach Moss squeezed the ball into the net from a wide angle. A few minutes later he scored again after being put through on goal by Holmes. Buxton held on with the defence of Tiernan McDonald and Elliot Booth standing firm and were well protected by Alexander Hughes and Matthew Etchells who were both outstanding in midfield. A superb team performance after such a long break since their last game meant the Vikings retained their league position of 3rd.
