Match Report
Saturday saw a much anticipated clash of both Buxton Junior Football Club Under 9 teams in the Kevin Baker Trophy at Matlock. With players, management and supporters all expecting a hard fought game, the fixture didn't fail to deliver. The Cobras took the kick off and immediately looked to push up and attack the Vikings goal. Tim Knowles took a long throw and found Dan Mellor to give a chance on goal, Max Trotter then found Lewis Hodgkinson who crossed in to Mellor again, but was frustrated by some quality defending by Jack Tomlinson and Alex Hughes for the Vikings. Tom Budenberg then had a long range shot, but was denied by some fine goal keeping from Jackson Baker. Hodgkinson again put Mellor through, only to be denied by the quick thinking Baker. Scott Goodwin, who played superbly with the in-form Max Trotter in midfield had a shot that was narrowly wide.
The Vikings then broke free, but fine defending from Knowles and Budenberg, snuffed out the attack. Mellor and Budenberg were again frustrated by Baker, and the Cobras appeared to be taking control of the match with their superb passing game. However the Vikings again broke and Callum Holmes was only denied by a great save from Liam Harrison. The Cobras continued to apply pressure, Goodwin set up Hodgkinson and Dan Taylor put Tom Lisser through, both again denied by Baker. Eventually a period of relentless pressure paid off, with Hodgkinson finding the back of the net, seconds before the referee blew for half time.
The second half looked as though it would continue with Cobra pressure. Hodgkinson again denied twice and Lisser cleared off the line. The Vikings then found their feet and only some fine defending play by Jamie Page stopped them through on goal. Tenacious play from the Vikings then saw them rattle the Cobra post, and win two successive corners, however Page was there again to clear the Cobras defence. Max Trotter then broke at the other end, Dan Taylor saw his attempt saved by Baker, as was Lissers' shot. The Vikings had another shot narrowly wide of the goal as they continued to search for the equaliser, but Page held strong in defence. Nice play between Hodgkinson, Mellor and Taylor saw another two fine saves from Baker and as the referee blew for full time the Cobras came out as 1-0 winners, in a keenly fought, and fantastic display of junior football from both Buxton teams.
