Match Report

Saturday was the 3rd meeting between the Cobras and the Vikings this season at Matlock and as with previous encounters it was another tense affair with both defences proving hard to breach. Cobras were straight into the attack putting some excellent crosses into the Viking penalty area from which Dan Taylor was unlucky not to score. Callum Snook and Elliott Booth were covering well in the Vikings defence. The Vikings began to press and an Alex Baggaley corner was sliced onto the post by a Cobras defender. Scott Goodwin and Max Trotter were battling hard in midfield with Alex Hughes and Zach Moss and the Cobras were again unlucky not to score when a Goodwin shot was only cleared to Mellor whose shot struck the post. The introduction of Tom Lisser, Lewis Hodgkinson and Jamie Page further increased the Cobras pressure but Jackson Baker saved well from Hodgkinson and Taylor's corner struck the crossbar. The second half continued in the same vein with Cobras pressing for the opening goal but the Viking defenders Tiernan McDonald and Lewis Gannon were holding strong. The opening goal finally came when Taylor's cross was swept home by Hodgkinson. This seemed to spur the Vikings into action and the Cobras defence of Jamie Page, Armin Bennett and Callum Beal were put under pressure. Harry Griffin and Joe Turner started creating a few openings. The Cobras then sent on some fresh legs and this seemed to swing the momentum back to the Cobras and from a goalmouth scramble in which Mellor and Hodgkinson had shots blocked the ball fell to the inform Lisser who slammed in the second goal. The Cobras were now playing some excellent football and when Hodgkinson delightfully controlled Lisser’s excellent through ball he volleyed narrowly over the bar. Trotter who was having an excellent game then went close before Griffin broke clear for the Vikings but was denied by a great save from Alex Hodgson to preserve the Cobras lead and save the Cobras support from a nail biting finish. The Cobras held on for a deserved win in what was a great advert for Junior football in Buxton and also credit to the lads for the respect showed for each other at the end.
