Match Report

The Vikings were looking to get back to winning and started quite brightly the Sonics. And it wasn’t long before a superb long through ball by Joe Turner set Alex Baggaley free to subsequently hammered the ball home to give the Vikings the lead. Sonics continued to press but Tiernan McDonald and Lewis Gannon proved too strong in defence. With Alexander Hughes holding well in midfield and Zach Moss and Joe Turner a constant threat down the wings the Vikings looked in control going into half time.

The second half started much the same with the Vikings pressing and the defence, now with Jack Tomlinson in there, stopping everything that came their way. It wasn’t long before the Vikings increased their lead when Zach Moss skipped passed a couple of defenders down the left hand side and then hit a great shot which came back off the post only for Matthew Etchells to poke home after he had followed it up. Etchells was soon to have a great shot from outside the area saved well by the Sonics keeper after some good work from James Tarr in midfield. From the resulting corner the Sonics broke away and with the Vikings defence chasing back, a last ditch tackle was fractionally mistimed resulting in a penalty for the Sonics. Keeper Baker had no chance as the penalty was well struck to bring the score to 2-1.

This appeared to knock the wind out of the Vikings and they were caught napping when a frantic goal mouth scramble led to an incredible double save from keeper Baker only for the ball to rebound to a Sonics player whose shot just crept in off the post bringing the scores level.

The Vikings managed to muster one last attack when Gannon broke down the right but unfortunately Baggaley could not convert the cross and the game ended a draw. Credit to the Sonics for their never-say-die attitude, but a disappointing result for the Vikings who took their eye off the ball and were punished accordingly.
